The Sealion 7 is offered in Australia in two grades. Premium is the entry point at $54,990, with a single rear motor. Performance tops the range at $63,990, adding a second motor for all-wheel drive.

Both are electric mid-size SUVs built on the same 4-door wagon body; the practical difference between them is drivetrain — single-motor RWD on Premium, dual-motor AWD on Performance.

Pros

• Both grades sit well under the $75,000 FBT threshold that applies from April 2027, measured on RRP and on drive-away price.
• Dual-motor AWD is available on Performance without pushing the price anywhere near the FBT thresholds.
• Every grade is comfortably clear of the luxury car tax threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles, so eligibility for the full FBT exemption is not in doubt before April 2027.

Cons

• Power output and seating configuration are not yet published for the Sealion 7 in this guide — confirm these directly with a dealer before deciding between grades.
• As a newer entrant to the Australian market, BYD's local service and charging network is less established than longer-tenured brands, though its footprint is growing quickly.

Battery electric vehicles under the luxury car tax threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles ($91,387, rising to $91,661 from 1 July 2026) are exempt from fringe benefits tax when packaged through a novated lease. That exemption is being phased out in two steps.

• Until 31 March 2027 — full exemption, unchanged, for any Sealion 7 grade under the luxury car tax threshold.
• From 1 April 2027 — full exemption continues only for electric vehicles under $75,000. Above that, up to the luxury car tax threshold, a 25% FBT discount applies instead.
• From 1 April 2029 — the full exemption ends. A 25% discount applies to all eligible vehicles.

Leases already in place are grandfathered: a lease entered into before a phase start date keeps its treatment for the term.

Where each grade sits: both Premium ($54,990 RRP, $59,247 drive-away) and Performance ($63,990 RRP, $68,697 drive-away) stay well clear of the $75,000 line, so both keep the full exemption right through the April 2027 change and only move to the 25% discount from April 2029.
