Buying a car outright is still tough for most full-time workers.

Even with interest rates now below 3.85% in Australia, the upfront deposit stings.

Petrol prices are not getting any cheaper too. And if you live in Adelaide or anywhere in South Australia, you’ve probably noticed EVs popping up in more driveways lately.

While the MG electric car Australia price is already one of the lowest in the EV market, when you package it into a novated lease, that upfront pain disappears.

You cut taxes. You cut running costs. And you get to drive a new EV sooner.

In this guide, we’ll walk through the latest MG EV prices, ownership costs, leasing benefits, and how to get started.

MG Electric Car Prices in Australia (July 2025 Guide)

MG’s lineup is simple. Here’s what they cost on average in South Australia:

A note on driveaway price: When we talk about driveaway price, we mean the total you’ll pay to get the car on the road. That includes the car itself plus registration, stamp duty, dealer delivery, and any applicable statutory charges. It’s the full, ready-to-drive cost.

ModelApprox. Driveaway Price (AU)Range (WLTP)Highlights
MG ZS EV Excite$34,990320 kmEntry-level EV, ideal for daily trips
MG ZS EV Essence$36,990320 kmAdded features: leather-style seats, tech
MG ZS EV Long Range$42,990440 kmLarger battery pack, extended range
MG4 Excite 51$37,990350 kmHatchback, sporty, value-packed

Note that prices vary depending on stock, location, and MG dealers. Always check the actual driveaway price and on-road costs, such as rego and stamp duty, before signing.

You can find available stock vehicles via Motorbuys, our sister platform that compares new MG models across Australia.

What You’ll Actually Spend to Own an MG EV

The driveaway price is just the start.

Here’s what else adds up, and how much you might save:

  • Charging costs: Around $12 to fully charge an MG ZS EV at home (based on 25c/kWh). That’s roughly 4c/km. A petrol SUV might cost you 15–18c/km.
  • Servicing: Fewer moving parts means fewer servicing headaches. MG recommends servicing every 12 months or 20,000km. That’s about 50% cheaper than petrol cars, based on service schedules.
  • Insurance & CTP: EVs can be slightly pricier to insure, but not always. Novated leases bundle third-party insurance, CTP, and more into one fixed cost.
  • Rego and stamp duty: These depend on your delivery location. SA offers rego discounts for eligible EVs. VIC scrapped its incentives in 2024.

Pro tip: Ask for a full quote including maximum dealer delivery charges, registration, and applicable statutory charges. That’s your real out-of-pocket figure.

EV Rebates & Discounts That Still Apply (2025)

Most state rebates are winding down. But here’s what’s still on the table:

In South Australia

Although the $3,000 rebate has ended, you can still get three years of free rego when registering a new, eligible EV. This applies to vehicles registered between 28 October 2021 and 30 June 2025. It’s one of the last incentives left standing in the state.

In Victoria

The Zero Emissions Vehicle Subsidy officially closed on 30 June 2024. The small $100-a-year rego discount was also scrapped in the 2024 budget. Right now, there are no active EV-specific incentives on offer.

In New South Wales

Both the $3,000 rebate and stamp duty exemption wrapped up on 1 January 2024. However, if you bought and applied before the cut-off, you could still be eligible for a refund up until 30 June 2024.

Keep in mind: These perks only apply to new stock vehicles. If you’re buying an MG EV, make sure it’s available at a participating MG dealer and hasn’t been registered before. Demo models and second-hand EVs don’t qualify.

ZS EV vs ZS EV Essence vs Long Range: What’s the Difference?

Thinking of going electric but stuck choosing between MG’s ZS EV models?

They might look similar on the surface, but there are a few key things you’ll want to know before you lock one in.

  1. ZS EV Excite

This is the base model, and honestly, it does a good job for everyday driving.

  • Battery: 51.1 kWh
  • Range: 320 km (WLTP)
  • Charging: 50 kW DC fast charge
  • Interior: Cloth seats, 10.1” touchscreen, wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
  • Safety: Adaptive cruise, AEB, lane keep assist (MG Pilot suite)

If you’re doing city drives around Adelaide, it’s more than enough. Basic comfort, lower price, no-frills practicality.

  1. ZS EV Essence
Same battery. Same range. But a bit more polish than the Excite and dialled up in comfort.
  • Same 51.1 kWh battery, 320 km range
  • Adds panoramic sunroof, synthetic leather trim, heated front seats, and 360° camera
  • Blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert included
  • Wireless phone charging and better interior finish

Perfect for buyers who want EV savings without missing out on the nicer details.

  1. ZS EV Long Range

Now let’s talk about the distance. Bigger battery means more driving freedom.

  • Battery: 72.6 kWh
  • Range: 440 km (WLTP)
  • Charging: 75 kW DC fast charge
  • Interior: Same premium finish as Essence
  • Slightly more boot weight, but barely noticeable on the road

If you’re commuting from Adelaide to Mount Barker, Victor Harbour, or doing long weekend getaways, the extra 120 km range makes a big difference. That’s one less charging stop every time you hit the highway.

Final Verdict

  • Excite: Budget-friendly city runabout
  • Essence: Same battery, nicer feel
  • Long Range: More km, better for regular road trips

What About Buying a Used MG EV?

You can lease used EVs, but only under certain conditions.

Used vehicles must:

  • Be under 10 years old
  • Have less than 160,000km
  • Be eligible for finance
  • Meet compliance standards

In short, if you find a good second-hand MG ZS EV with low kays, we might be able to lease it. But FBT exemptions only apply to new EVs, not used ones.

Can You Lease an MG EV Through Work?

Yes, only if your employer offers novated leasing. We work with 400+ companies across Australia, helping staff lease EVs like the ZS and MG4, without loan drama.

Here’s how it works:

  1. You get a quote from us
  2. We talk to your payroll team
  3. You pick your car
  4. Lease is set up and paid through your salary

How Reliable is the MG?

Plenty of Aussies were sceptical at first. Chinese-made car? Budget pricing? But MG’s changed the game.

The ZS EV is now one of Australia’s most popular EVs, with strong sales across 2023–24. It’s also backed by:

  • 7-year unlimited km warranty
  • 8-year battery warranty
  • Decent resale value

MG isn’t Tesla, but for $20K less, it punches well above its weight.

Novated Leasing Makes the MG Electric Car Way More Affordable

Here’s the part most people miss: you don’t have to pay full price upfront.

Novated leasing means car costs come from your pre-tax salary.

Here’s how that plays out:

  • No deposit needed. No balloon payment either.
  • Tax savings: You reduce your taxable income. This could be $3K–$7K in annual savings, depending on your salary.
  • FBT-free for EVs: Thanks to new ATO rules, MG EVs under $91,387 get full Fringe Benefits Tax exemption when salary sacrificed. That’s 100% tax-free driving.
  • One monthly payment: Lease cost + rego + charging + insurance + servicing. All bundled. All pre-tax.

Let’s say you earn $85,000 annually:

  • You pay less than $200/week
  • Drive a new MG ZS EV
  • Pay less tax and No GST.
  • No stress about bills or repairs

And at the end of your lease, you’ve got three options:

  • Buy the car by paying the agreed residual value.
  • Upgrade to a new lease with a different vehicle.
  • Return it and finish the agreement with no obligation to purchase.
